This year's downtown Clean Sweep was hosted on Saturday, April 1 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.. Over 100 volunteers participated throughout the morning in a wide range of tasks, including hanging our U.S. flags, mulching our downtown garden beds, sweeping downtown sidewalks, and cleaning up brush and trash along the river banks.
Clean Sweep is an event hosted through the Design Committee of Marietta Main Street every year. Downtown beautification is a year-round effort, and this one day of service is a tremendous service to preparing the heart of our community for the sunshine and foot traffic that spring and summer brings.
This year, representatives from Congressman Bill Johnson's office and our local City Council joined with employees of the City of Marietta, members of the Marietta Main Street Board of Directors, volunteers from various Main Street committees, students from Marietta High School Environmental Club, MHS National Honor Society, Washington County Historical Society, Huntington Bank, Peoples Bank, Chemours, Kona Ice of the Mid-Ohio Valley, Green Acres of Marietta, Marietta Adventure Company, The Workingman's Store, The Castle Historic House Museum, American Flags & Poles, Salvation Army, Marietta Rotary, Marietta Civitan, Washington State Community College staff, and Marietta College's Sigma Kappa sorority.
In this one day of service, our 100 volunteers donated 400 hours of service for a total investment of nearly $9,228 into downtown Marietta.
In addition to this incredible investment by our community, Sam's Club of Vienna donated a full pallet of water bottles - 1,500 bottles - for volunteers during Clean Sweep and other volunteer efforts throughout the year.
Jack Haessly of Haessly Hardwood Lumber Co. donated 60 yards of mulch made entirely of aged, darkened, premium grade oak mulch to continue sustaining our downtown beautification efforts.
And, last but not least, the City of Marietta not only provided staff for our Clean Sweep, but they provided a dump truck and a front end loader for mulch distribution.
Thank each and every one of you for your tremendous help this Saturday! We look forward to seeing you next year!
